About me

Hello. We are She and Her. She met Her in London Summer 2006 and they decided they would create work together. It has gone well, so far. There is two of us, and there are reasons for that. One: It’s nice to share. Ideas, doubts, agreements, disagreements, fees and scones. Second: We like sparking off each other and use the other as ignition, and we find it takes us quite far. Three: Sometimes we fight. That is good, too. We don`t intend to create gender specific work but find that sometimes other people think we do. We still want to think about that some more. We are interested in the moment when notions of the every day life turn into something else. For example, we get strangely excited when we watch a herd of plastic bags perform a cyclonic dance in front of the station or when we see someone traveling with three overweight supermarket trolleys, moving back and forth at traffic lights to take one trolley over to the other side at a time. We like the city and we constantly think about ways to move around in it; exploring the underlying rules patterns of urban spaces we are always looking out for specific quality of sites – how do people move around a space, what is it they do, what is it they don`t do. And it seems we always end up doing something people would do elsewhere, but not there. We are interested in juxtaposing. Mostly notions of the public and the private. We find new qualities when those two get mixed up; sometimes we lure strangers into conversations during which they tell us things they haven`t told anyone before. We like to see things differently. From other people. By exploring perceptions of the every day we also temporarily manage to shift frames of mind and open up possibilities for spontaneous and unexpected encounters. We like to be ambiguous. Our work is not meant to present answers, but to pose questions as to how the every day can be perceived and read in new possible ways. And there is always a riddle for the viewers to be resolved in their own heads. We like people. We are interested in what other people think about our work and encourage direct engagement at showings, talks and presentations. And we always seek ways so the work resonates with others beyond the physical performance time. How we do that, we won`t tell – just yet. She and Her (Dianna Brinsden and Martina von Holn) She and Her are an emerging female performance duo creating public interventions since 2006. Both artists are expats from Auckland/ New Zealand and Hamburg/ Germany and are living and working in Hertford and London. Their style of work roots in the sensitivity towards different geographic, cultural and social environments while exploring artistic material deriving directly from the site and its inhabitants. Scrutinizing the underlying parameters, patterns and focal points of sites She and Her set out mapping locations through a set of rules they place on themselves and which will frame their exploration. Through taking on shifting roles between viewers and performers the audience is invited to become part of the work as well as interact with the artists. Using movement and body language as well as clothing and objects the artists explore figurative signal quality acting as focal points within the surrounding environment The work She and Her create is time-based and live, the artists have adopted a strategy of documentation through video and photography. The duo has performed in the UK, Germany and New Zealand and are seeking to establish a body of international work.
