About me

Thanks to the earliest of my three careers, which was in architecture, I spent many hours in surveying, restoring, modernising, converting, extending and sadly, demolishing Norfolk cottages and farm buildings. An activity heavily punctuated with the pleasure, angst and confusion of conversing, contracting and arguing with more Norfolk dialect speakers than I care to shake a stick at. Fortunately, despite parents who had levered themselves into the professional classes and were intent on hiding their roots, I had maternal grandparents, great uncles, great aunts and cousins of all varieties, who between them covered pretty much the entire spectrum of Norfolk's regional accents and dialect, from pleasantly countrified to almost incomprehensible. Having mentioned my three careers, I should explain that although architecture was my first, it continued in some degree as a background to my subsequent activities as a craft potter and finally as a computer programmer. The architecture, although based in Norwich, took me into the countryside and later the pottery moved me there. It was my third career in computing that led via the Internet into family history research. Family history led me to social history and eventually to the idea for these web pages. I am NOT the author of Bexham, the Radio Norfolk soap opera.
