Five Things About Me (as of 14 June 2008) 1. I enjoy reading and hope to be a write a book in the near future. I don't really have a favorite author but I do admire the honest, uncomplicated prose of John Steinbeck and the way Raymond Carver is able to use such economy to create a mildly disturbing mood in the most mundane affairs of everyday life, as well as the biting wit of Pauline Kael's film reviews. 2. I am a "recovering" artist. I am particularly interested in the study of aesthetics and its connections with social, political and economic history, as well as its ties with phenomenology, ethics and existentialism. Some of the artists I admire are Anselm Kiefer, Jasper Johns, Cy Twombly and Lucien Freud, as well as the architectural drawings of Frank Lloyd Wright. 3. I am mad about the movies. I love old Hollywood screwball comedies like Bringing Up Baby and The Philadelphia story as well as great classics of the Italian neo-realist period and the French New Wave. As for contemporary film-makers, I think Paul Thomas Anderson is exceptionally talented. As for actors, I'll watch anything (well, almost) with Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett in it and I think Ryan Gosling is the most exciting actor of his generation. 4. I follow most sports but I'm particularly nuts about tennis. There's just something so gladiatorial about two opponents facing off, sans coaching, left to their own weapons and tactical skills to defeat the other. The tournament I look forward to the most is the French Open (I love clay court tennis) and hence naturally matches involving Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin (who has sadly retired prematurely) never fail to have me glued to my TV screen all through the night. 5. One of my biggest regrets is never learning how to play the guitar. I can't even read music but music is essential to me. I love everything by Nina Simone and almost everything by the Beatles , Eleanor Rigby and Hey Jude being my particular favorites. I DO have my favorites among the contemporaries though, lest I appear too much like an old soul- U2 (no surprises there), Rufus Wainwright, Sufjan Stevens, Green Day, Switchfoot, Collective Soul...
