    • I'm a bit worried about my garden pheasants. Yesterday at teatime, a fox was wandering about the lawn as bold as brass, sniffing round the bird table and the pheasants' hide in the rockery. The cock pheasant was kicking up a real indignant racket, though the fox ignored him and went on to investigate the bonfire ashes. I haven't seen or heard... more

    • Yesterday I woke up to see that one of the mountains further south was covered in snow. It snowed quite heavily yesterday (and today promises more of the same) but fortunately didn't stick. Where I live it's very easy to get snowed in with a minimal amount of snow simply because there is no great plan in place to grit the roads, and nobody has... more

    • We've ripped out the fire place in the kitchen. where there once was a lovely glowing orangy warm thing, there is a big gaping whole, sucking the warmth out of the entire house. And because life is a bitch, its been snowing. I met up with Kalam at 2:00 pm this afternoon. We went to the Tempest Cafe and had coffee. Jackie and his girlfriend (I'm... more

    • ... neither unseasonable snowstorm a winter presage - to paraphrase Aristotle.Today, I saw my first swallow of 2008 whilst I was out photographing the snow this afternoon. I hope the poor creature can find enough insects to survive.I had to be quick - as the covering only lasted about 30 minutes after the sun came out, as you can see from these... more

    • The mountains where Mr Penry likes to walk (and navigate by dog poo) were covered in snow this morning, while our garden was heavily frosted. Off and on today it has been snowing hard but nothing has stuck, although I'd never been surprised to wake up to a tump of the white stuff tomorrow. Apart from writing (no change there, then) I have been... more

    • Elsewhere in Britain we are told they woke to snow again this morning. Here we have bright sunshine and bitter cold. It looked like a jacket morning, but a nose out of the door proved it to be a coat, scarf and gloves day. Now - quarter-to-three - it has just started trying to snow with a few reluctant flakes wondering whether they should make... more

    • I love the swings, they remind me of carefree times as a child, who could swing highest? who could jump off the furthest? who could fall and get the biggest scar. From time to time I visit this park and have a swing, see if I can go as high as I used to, but I tend to stop, either for worry of falling or from motion sickness. Thank god I didn't... more
