- ***the colour of your skys*** “I happened to see the incredibly blue southern sky. It was beautiful. But the steel-blue, plumbeous, gray, violet, dove-coloured and pearl or dilute blue northern sky can be a magnificent view and a great experience too. I know two places in the town I live in, where one can admire the scud, where the sky is high... more

- I love the internet. But the problem with it is the amount of unchecked, unverifiable so-called ‘facts’ that are propagated to everyone that somehow become part of the general knowledge of the nation. Here are some of the most annoying I have found – ones that people actually believe. Please please please, give it some thought... more

- Today during the lecture in my history course, the professor got to the topic of how the native americans were victims of genocide, and how the Europeans knew what they were doing was wrong, but did it anyway. He then asked who could tell him of an example of genocide currently. Obviously,(I thought it was obvious) he was talking about Darfur... more

- Having given the car a proper clean inside (of which it was sadly in need after a summer of wet, sandy, muddy, ice-cream and chip eating children and dogs) I was unable to continue by cleaning the outside of the car as it started to rain. I thus indulged myself with watching some daytime television - Elizabeth R, which was being repeated on UKTV... more

- 1 SEPTEMBER -- birth of Bill and Tom Kaulitz. I asked myself: why the group is called Tokio Hotel? I don’t know why, I only can suppose that it’s because one good Japanese group had the German name SCHWARZ STEIN. Last year, there was a rumour, that some girlfriend of Bill committed suicide. Well, something of the kind should be expected.... more

- Elizabeth I

- Queen Elizabeth I's dying words are reputed to be 'All my possessions for one moment of time'. Famous last words in most cases should be taken with a pinch of salt, and like many others these are probably apocryphal. However, assuming she said them, one can make a point about the trade off between health spending and life expectancy. Most health... more

- Are you a hill or valley person?
- by technomist

- I found this lecture illuminating. It is about the cultural and political differences between the stateless peoples and ways of life of the hills and the state centred 'civilisations' in the valleys of South-East Asia. The speaker is Professor James Scott, Sterling Professor of Political Science and Anthropology at Yale University. http://uc... more
