- It has been a good year. Loads of raspberies for pies, crumbles and jams. Potatoes were good and so are the carrots. We grew red cabbage for the first time this year and it was so delicious and sweet. Our son who pretty much enjoys any food did not like it. I think he was put off by the colour of it after it had been cooked, blue! Courgettes... more

- We've been lucky to receive lots of vegetables courtesy of S's mum - especially cabbages and beans. Her allotment is a full harvest of green edibles, most of which can be frozen (except for cabbage) so it looks like she will have plenty for the next year (as will we and all of her friends. So a menu of chilli peppers stuffed with feta cheese, red onion and bulghur wheat accompanied by roasted courgettes, new potatoes and beans, beans and more... more

- Another 'I don't believe it!' moment today. I went to the allotment - first time for a week. Plenty of beans to be picked. And an over-large courgette or three. And three leeks. And a butternut squash (I didn't mean to pick it - it broke off in my hand). Then the sweetcorn caught my eye. Ye gods. Half of it was mown down. Nibbled cobs... more

- My attempts to grow fresh fruit and veg this year have been a bit hit-or-miss. For various reasons, we couldn't put any time in at the allotment during May, the critical growing/preparation period. So although my neighbours are thoroughly sick of runner and french beans already, I've just scraped enough together for dinner tonight. But,... more

- DAY 16 Today I have just bought food. We took our recycling to the collection point in town today; someone had dumped what looked like their carboot leftovers, there was a book on tropical fish; a bit soggy, but still good, my bf is drying it out, he is really pleased with it! I found a plant pot and matching base, which is perfect for my... more
