Description
Jean Baptiste-Bernadotte. I studied the Napoleonic Wars during my history A level, and although I believe Napoleon was wrong on a lot of issues politically, one thing he did brilliantly was encourage Meritocracy. Napoleon assembled an elite group of generals which he called "Marshals", and he would bring several of them on each of his major campaigns. Each of the marshals have very interesting stories. Bernadotte is in my opinion the paragon of meritocracy. He was born a peasant and enlisted in the French army in 1780 as a private, and was a foot-soldier for 9 years before he became a colonel, a brigadier and then a general of the line before becoming one of Napoleon's first eighteen Marshals in 1804. He later became King of Sweden after the current house came to an end. He then allied against Napoleon and commanded the Swedish forces at the battle of Leipzig in 1814. He later became King of Norway as well, unifying it with Sweden, and reigned until 1844. His descendants are still the Swedish Royal Family. Has anybody ever done more than Bernadotte to enhance the wellbeing of his offspring and save his bloodline?
